The band was originally formed in 1964, billing themselves as The Penetrators, with Steve Mills – Guitar, Larry Lytle – (guitar & vocals), Paul Lordeman – (drums), and Mons Teigen – bass. The Penetrators disbanded and were in limbo for a period of time.
At a battle of the bands, Larry Lytle (guitar & vocals) and Monty Monteius (Keyboards) got together and added Ron Stern (drums), Larry Bone (bass), Tom Peterson (saxophone) for a short time. Tom dropped out and Vaughn McKelvey was added, and the Night Raiders were born.
They recorded their first original song “Girl Night & Day” at Valtron Studios in early 1966 along with covers tunes of the The Young Rascals, Mitch Ryder, The Standells, and many more. The Night Raiders went on to open for the Hondells and Marilee Rush & The Turnabouts.
The Night Raiders flourished in many venues across Montana until September, 1967 when the Viet Nam conflict and collage forced the bands break up.
